The Bridge of Accusations

There is a bridge in the eastern marches where three roads meet above a river. The locals call it the Bridge of Accusations, though its true name has been lost to time.

The bridge was built by a master mason named Cael, who used stone from a ruined monastery, where monks had once inscribed prayers into every brick. When Cael's apprentice, Maren, discovered him stealing the monastery's foundation stones, she accused him publicly atop the partly finished bridge.

Cael's reputation crumbled. In his rage and shame, he pushed Maren, who stumbled and fell from the bridge. She struck her head on the stones below and drowned in the shallow river.

Cael completed the bridge alone, but could never cross it after it was complete. Each time he stepped onto the span, he heard Maren's voice speaking her accusation—not in anger, but in sorrow, as if mourning what he had become rather than condemning what he had done.

He went mad with the weight of it and threw himself from the bridge, striking his head and drowning in the inky waters below. To this day, those who cross the bridge with clear conscience pass without incident. But those who carry hidden guilt hear whispers rising from below—not accusations from the dead, but echoes of their own conscience, amplified by the stolen prayers that Cael built into the bridge's foundation.
